"Be the change you wish to see in the world" is always a quote I live by.
Life was much different when I applied and took part in the Miss BC Pageant in 2011. I was newly graduated from the BCIT Broadcast Journalism Program, had just finished up a media internship with the Western Hockey League, Vancouver Giants, and was looking for what was next for me.
I came across information about the Miss BC Pageant online and wondered if I was pageant material. I took the risk and applied and I was ever changed. I met so many wonderful people, learned so much about inner beauty and found my passion to help people.
Charity is such an important part of the Miss BC pageant and learning about the Canadian Cancer Society's Cops for Cancer and meeting the riders and junior riders ignited a fire within me to raise as much money as I could. So I did. I raised over $7000 in two months which earned me the title of Miss Charity BC 2011/2012.
My passion for fundraising hasn't stopped there. As a business owner of my own baby and toddler moccasin company, Mia's Moccs, giving back is such a huge priority. Throughout the year we donate some of our profit to various charities including Cops for Cancer Tour De Rock and Tour De Coast, BC Woman's Hospital Foundation NICU, Autism Canada and the Comox Military Family Resource Centre.
I am now happily married for almost three years to my husband who has committed his life to serve our country in the Royal Canadian Air Force and we have a beautiful 17 month old, Mia, who is the light of our life.
"Be the change you wish to see in the world". Miss BC might be where you start.
